First Coat in partnership with fellow not for profit, You Belong is producing 'Neighbour', an art exhibition composed of work from both people from a refugee background and members of their host community.
'Neighbour' will examine the idea of neighbourly relations and will explore what neighbourliness means.
The artists will reflect on community, family, and friendship, themes raising important questions about ideas of a home, neighbourhood, belonging, and co-existence from a variety of perspectives.
The artworks in 'Neighbour' will allow outsider artists, emerging artists and professional artists all to contribute pieces to the exhibition. The first of the works have been created in classes and workshops hosted by First Coat and You Belong over the past month. With the guidance of professional artists in various mediums, we have been working with refugees to create exhibition-quality pieces of art while sharing music, stories and laughs.
Toowoomba is a Refugee Welcome Zone and one of the largest refugee settlement areas in Queensland. We now ask you to examine these same themes with some focus on the refugee experience or your experience with refugees, migration and/or community diversity.
Due to high interest in this exhibition, we are extending the time to submit expressions of interest.
